Three Tips for Remembering Names in the Workplace, Provided by a Reno Employment Agency

One of the most normal and common memory issues people face daily is remembering names and being able to put them to faces. It gets more challenging whenever you are trying to remember multiple people’s names in a timely manner. Do you remember the last time you had to remember someone’s name during your employment? If you were not able to remember their names without a hassle, that is completely okay. Lucky for you, Express Employment Professionals is here to share some helpful tips for the next time you need to remember the name of a new coworker or friend.

  • Repeat the name a few times.

Repetition can be your best friend when you are trying to remember anything, let alone names. While you are talking to someone after just being introduced, try to slip their name into the conversation a few times casually. As an example, instead of simply asking “How are you,” you should ask, “How are you, (Their name)?” If you use this tactic, remember to pace yourself and try not to use their name too many times, as this can make the situation uncomfortable, weird, or more awkward than conversational. Repeating their name in the conversation will also help you from remembering their name wrong. It will give the other person the opportunity to correct you, so you will not accidentally put the wrong name to the wrong face.

  • Try using mnemonic devices.

You probably do not know what a mnemonic device is by just hearing the name, but it is actually a really simple thing. This is a trick or method that personally helps you recall information, such as word association and rhyming to musical melodies to sing in your head. The possibilities are endless as to what you can use because the whole point is to help you remember, not someone else. If you meet someone with a name that sounds unique to you, ask them how they spell it. Keep in mind that sometimes the methods may not work for you, so it could take a couple of different mnemonic devices for you to remember their name.

  • Make conscious decision to remember.

You must put in an effort when it comes to remembering names. If you do not try, all your efforts could be in vain, and a month later, you may not remember someone’s name when faced with a conversation. Try to put the person’s name to their face mentally as you are approaching them. If remembering names is commonly a hard task for you, you should start to continuously prepare your brain to hold onto information. It will slowly become an automatic process, and you will be remembering names in no time.

If you are not able to remember names, it will not be the end of the world. People would rather be asked again what their name is than be called the wrong name repeatedly, so as awkward as it may be, politely ask someone what their name is if you really cannot remember. It will show more respect if you are truthful about the whole thing and remember that it is completely okay to struggle with remembering their name at first, as long as you get it eventually.
